FHE: Pioneer Trek

Tonight for Family Home Evening we had a special pioneer lesson.  We started off with a little lesson on the pioneers and why they left their homes and their possessions to cross the plains in wagons.  After our short lesson we had the girls pick an item that they would have taken in their handcarts if they could only choose one thing.  Hazel and Lilia chose their pillow pets and Sophie her special blanket.  We loaded our "wagon" with water, food, and our meager provisions and we set off on our pioneer trek....around the backyard.  Although a trek around the backyard hardly seems strenuous, there were a few notable hardships along the way:

1.  Lilia was in charge of carrying Jack.  Just like the older pioneer children had to take care of their younger siblings.
2.  Jack "died" along the trail.  (don't worry, he really just went inside to go to bed, healthy and safe)
3.  Rich got called to go serve with the Mormon Batallion leaving us behind to fend for ourselves.
4.  A "ravaging wolf" (our dog Winnie) tried to steal our food.
5.  The "Woman's Pull" up the hill with just the girls.
6.  Sophie ate some "bad jerky" and got sick so she had to sit in the "cart" and be pulled by her sisters.

We finished the night around the campfire roasting marshmallows.  Hopefully something will sink in and the girls will have a better appreciation for the Pioneers and the 24th of July holiday.

You guys don't mess around when it comes to FHE. I'm not sure I could just whip those poineer outfits out of anywhere. How amazing, what a fun idea. I'm sure its one the kids will remember forever.
